BT Openreach ISDN Stop Sell

April 21, 2021

BT Openreach Stop Sell

The BT Openreach Stop Sell is the next phase of the ISDN Switch Off. It has been announced that on the 29th April 2022, copper lines will no longer be sold from 118 exchanges across the UK.

This movement in technology is set to affect millions of both business and residential premises in the country. Now is the time to begin looking at migrating your business communications to fibre technology.

What is the ISDN Switch Off?

BT Openreach have announced that by 2026 they will have begun the shutdown of the ageing copper wire telephone line network.

Over the last 20 years, technology has evolved at a very fast pace. The ISDN network is being phased out in favour of internet-based lines, which are the future for business communications. Hosted communications offer the end user greater reliability, and provides far more flexibility than the existing copper network.

Due to the many benefits provided by the newer technology, there will no longer be a requirement for the majority of traditional analogue phone line services. This is why the outdated technology is being phased out, which BT Openreach are calling the “ISDN Switch Off”.

The copper switch off is not going to be complete for a few more years, but that does not mean you should ignore this change. Every business using ISDN will begin to be affected as each step of phasing out this technology is in progress.

What exchanges will be impacted by the BT Openreach Stop Sell?

Salisbury was the first city in the UK to begin the movement to full fibre. As mentioned, a further 118 exchanges will be no longer supporting new ISDN or PTSN lines. Please see the table below for the full list of areas in the UK that will be affected on 29th April 2022.

If your business is located in one of the above areas and you are currently operating on a traditional ISDN system, now is a good time to start thinking about upgrading your communications system.

What does this mean for your business?

If your telephone line is impacted by the ISDN Stop Sell, you will soon no longer be able to purchase any additional lines. This means your business growth will become hugely limited.

You will also no longer be able to amend your current service. This means no changes can be made to your existing installation, including working line takeovers, migrations, CP transfers, addition of broadband to copper voice lines or bandwidth modify. As you can imagine, this has the potential to severely disrupt any growth or changes within your business.

The risk of leaving the switch to the last minute

If you currently have an ISDN telephone line, you will be able to continue using your existing installation after the Stop Sell. However, this will only be the case until 2025 when the technology will cease to exist.

Leaving the switch to VoIP or SIP technology this late, puts your business at risk of having your communications cut off. Begin the migration away from analogue technology now to future-proof your business.
